I find that English Heritage has been asked to look at listing the building - some support from councillors etc. would be worthwhile, although it has to be on heritage grounds, not in order to support the Big Table. Also they don't tend to be very speedy, and can only make recommendations to the minister, who agrees or not. Write to Louise.Horsfall@english-heritage.org.uk
When Crossrail was putting out preliminary information in 2005, archaeology and heritage were at the very bottom of the list of environmental considerations. Has anyone seen their Environmental Impact Statement? It would be interesting to know how many other significant buildings have been or will be lost. The important thing about this one is that it is the last of seven that were built - it's not as if this one could go because there are others.

Dear Ann, I have escalated the issue to the Chair of the Assembly transport committee whose office is looking into that and other options. They have better access to Crossrail and may be able to tell us more about that sort of thing. I hope we'll get some traction soon. Many thanks for getting in touch.

Sincerely, Layla

Good article Layla. As co-chair of WEF (Wandsworth Environment Forum) we are running a petition asking Wandsworth Council to consult with residents on a borough wide 20mph limit for streets where people live and shop.

Living Streets (www.livingstreets.org.uk) are running a City of 20 campaign aimed at the mayoral candidates for next year's elections. Please support the Living Streets campaign through their website.

We have still to update the local 20's Plenty for Wandsworth website. If you'd like to sign up, drop me a line and I can email over a paper form for you to sign. If you are able to get a few friends / neighbours to sign as well that would be great. jon.irwin [at] gmail.com

Very interesting and thought provoking piece, Layla, made all the more 'real' through your unique personal-political insight.

TOTALLY agree with you that the overly graphical depiction of his mutilated face was completely over the top - it's almost as if the media were wrapped up in some sort of blood lust...

Anyway, whilst personally I would have preferred that Gaddafi were caught and tried (perhaps by the International Court of Justice at the Hague), I do realise that this would undoubtedly have provided a platform for his trademark flamboyance and egotistical rants, risking the whole process to descend in to farce. That said, I believe in due process and the rule of law which I'm sure if the ICJ were given the chance to analyse his litany of human rights abuses would have had enough evidence to put Gaddafi and many of his progeny & acolytes away for a very long time. Alas this wasn't to be...

I too am following the situation in Libya very closely. The NTC are a coalition 'government' born out of and bound together by a common goal - the demise of Gaddafi. Now that has been achieved I hope and pray that Libya can now embrace democracy and respect for human rights - something that has been sorely missing from that country for a very long time.

As a follow up note to this post, Liam Fox resigned on Friday 14th October following a relentless week of media scrutiny. Adam Werritty is still under investigation.
