Layla Moran, Lib Dem MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, has said that Parliament is “an important step closer” to preventing a disastrous no-deal Brexit, after the House of Commons passed the European Union (Withdrawal) (No. 6) Bill tonight.
The Bill will now be debated in the House of Lords, where peers including Lord Newby, the Lib Dem Leader in the House of Lords, are prepared for an all-night sitting.
The Bill provides the means to rule out a no-deal Brexit. If passed, it will ensure that Boris Johnson has to seek an extension if he cannot secure the support of MPs for a withdrawal agreement or leaving the EU without a deal.
Commenting, Layla said:
“Tonight we are an important step closer to stopping Boris Johnson from dragging Oxfordshire and our country off the cliff edge of a no-deal Brexit.
“The Liberal Democrats have been working with others to ensure that this Tory-created mess does not lead to us falling out of the EU without a deal on October 31st. We will continue to do everything in our power to ensure this is the case.
“But the only sure way to end the chaos is to take this back to the people through a People’s Vote and, as the strongest and biggest remain party, we will keep fighting to stop Brexit altogether.”
