Moran: the fight to stop Brexit is not over – “we must have a People’s Vote”

Layla Moran, the Lib Dem MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, has said that “we must have a People’s Vote” after MPs voted to hold off the approval of Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal until the relevant legislation is passed, meaning the Prime Minister must seek a Brexit extension.

Moran said that “the PM has to now obey the law, and not try and sneak his deal through”. The Liberal Democrats have tabled an amendment to the Queen’s Speech calling for a People’s Vote, and have called on the Government to extend Article 50 to take no deal off the table.

Layla branded it “simply outrageous” that Boris Johnson said the UK was still leaving on October 31st in the House, even after the Letwin amendment passed.

Commenting, Layla Moran said:

“The Liberal Democrats will continue to lead the fight against Brexit and keep up the pressure to make sure the people are given the final say.

“Boris Johnson’s Brexit has created a national crisis: he closed down Parliament, lied to the Queen and brought back a deal more extreme than Theresa May’s. And now he threatens to not obey the law. He must write that letter now.

“This deal is bad for our country. It will damage our economy, undermine our NHS and public services, could strip us of vital workers’ rights and undermines environmental standards.

“I and the Lib Dems will continue to stand up for Remainers. We want to stop Brexit and ensure that this deal is put back to the people for them to have the final say.

“This isn’t over by a long shot, and the Liberal Democrats demand better. Let’s put this deal back to the people with the option to remain.”
