Layla: Dark arts of Cummings have no place in Downing Street

Liberal Democrat MP for Oxford West and Abingdon Layla Moran has written to Cabinet Secretary Sir Mark Sedwill, calling on him to block the appointment of Dominic Cummings as senior adviser to Boris Johnson on grounds of suitability.


The letter cites that Cummings has previously been found in contempt of Parliament for refusing to attend a select committee, and highlights a track record of dubious behaviour in relation to leaked documents and unsubstantiated campaign claims during the EU referendum.

Layla Moran “delighted” that Jo Swinson is new leader of the Liberal Democrats

Layla Moran, Lib Dem MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, has said she is “delighted” following the announcement that Jo Swinson will take over from Sir Vince Cable as leader of the Liberal Democrats.

Swinson won against Sir Ed Davey, in a contest that was defined by reasoned argument and debate. She received 47,997 votes to Ed’s 28,021. Turnout was 72%.

Moran: A34 spending undermined by spectre of the Expressway

Layla Moran, Lib Dem MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, has said that the A34 improvement plans announced by Highways England “don’t go far enough” to improve conditions on the road.


Her comments come after Highways England made it clear that some improvements to the A34, such as the installation of a hard shoulder, would not be given the go-ahead whilst the Oxford to Cambridge Expressway project remains on the cards.

Layla Moran introduces Bill to improve nutrition in school food

Layla Moran, Lib Dem MP for Oxford West and Abingdon and the party’s education spokesperson, has introduced a Bill in Parliament to improve the nutritional quality of school meals.


The School Food Bill will require all food in publicly-funded schools to be free of added sugar by 2022, and further restrict the serving of foods high in fat, salt or sugar.


Layla’s new Bill is part of her ongoing campaign to tackle issues of obesity and poor health amongst pupils.

Layla Moran nominated for MP of the Year Award 2019

Layla Moran, Lib Dem MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, has been nominated for the MP of the Year Award by members of the public, in recognition of her work over the past year.

Layla, who won the People’s Choice Other Party MP of the Year award in 2018, said she was “delighted”.

The MP of the Year Awards give individuals, and those from grassroots community organisations, the opportunity to commend MPs for the hard work they do throughout the year, particularly in relation to their work with minority communities.

The public first nominates MPs. Winners are chosen in two ways. The first are Judge’s Awards, chosen by an independent panel of judges who blind judge the nominees by considering the work and accolades of the selected MPs. The second looks to the public to determine the winners of the People’s Choice Awards.

Lib Dems reveal extent of ‘criminal’ Tory police cuts

Liberal Democrat analysis of new Home Office figures, published this week, has revealed that the Conservative Government cut funding to Thames Valley Police by 5.9% in real terms between 2015-16 and 2019-20.

According to Liberal Democrat analysis, total government funding to all 43 forces (in 2019-20 prices) fell from £8.48 billion in 2015-16 to £7.99 billion in 2019-20. 32 of the 43 forces across the country experienced cuts of 6% or more.

Moran “absolutely thrilled” as local mental health partnership wins prestigious NHS Parliamentary Award

Layla Moran, Lib Dem MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, has expressed her delight as Oxfordshire Mental Health Partnership, who she nominated along with other Oxon MPs, won the national Excellence in Mental Health Care Award today in Parliament. They were shortlisted last month for the South East.

The partnership brings together six specialist mental health organisations to create positive initiatives that improve the lives of people living with mental health challenges. Teams offer a wide range of interventions including inpatient hospital care, community mental health and third sector services to get people back into employment, education, stable accommodation and relationships. Effective recovery is holistic and OMHP provides a complete recovery package supporting people through their journey, focusing on emotional and physical care and wellbeing, education and skills, employment, financial stability, housing.
