PM's 'New Deal' speech in breach of Trades Descriptions Act

“The challenges we face are so huge, from soaring unemployment to the climate crisis, yet Boris Johnson's ambition is so limited. We need to see a massive investment in retraining to build the green jobs of the future and ensure that people aren't left behind.Responding to Boris Johnson's speech today claiming to be setting out a "New Deal", Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran said:  “This speech appears to be in breach of the Trades Descriptions Act. FDR built the Hoover Dam but today we learned that our equivalent will be a new bridge in Sandwell.

Layla said:  “The Government's New Deal works out at around £75 a head. The lack of ambition that this government shows is unbelievable. You cannot change Britain by scrabbling together a few quid rattling around behind the government sofa and tinkering with planning rules.

“The challenges we face are so huge, from soaring unemployment to the climate crisis, yet Boris Johnson's ambition is so limited. We need to see a massive investment in retraining to build the green jobs of the future and ensure that people aren't left behind.

“All in all, this speech shows why people are cynical about politics – it's all spin, reheated announcements, and no new money to tackle some of the biggest issues our nation faces.”
