£705m on Brexit border infrastructure is "appalling waste" of resources

"The government's stubborn refusal to extend the transition period means we now face a costly and damaging no-deal Brexit at the end of the year.Oxford West & Abingdon MP, Layla Moran, has responded to the announcement that the UK will spend £705m on new infrastructure at the border to cope with leaving the EU customs union at the end of the year.

Layla Moran said:  "This is an appalling waste of money at a time we should be focusing our resources on tackling this pandemic. This funding could have been invested in our NHS to help prepare for a second wave. Instead, it is being spent on extra bureaucracy and checks for businesses at our borders, including on imports of vital medical supplies from the EU.

"The government's stubborn refusal to extend the transition period means we now face a costly and damaging no-deal Brexit at the end of the year. I am urging all opposition parties to come together to stop this disastrous outcome and move this country forward."
