Layla Moran MP has responded to the Prime Minister’s coronavirus statement in the House of Commons yesterday afternoon. Layla Moran, who chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Coronavirus said “The Prime Minister’s statement fails to address the question of how these new measures will work without a fully functioning local test and trace system in place.
Layla said “And, to make things worse, he almost seemed to say that more support for test and trace was contingent on local authorities working with the government and accepting the new measures imposed on them. That is completely unacceptable, and the government should focus on fixing the broken test and trace system instead of using testing and tracing capacity as leverage in negotiations with local authorities.
“I am surprised by his characterisation of the measures as a balance between saving lives while protecting jobs and the economy since we already have the highest death toll in Europe and the worst predicted drop in GDP too and no exit strategy in sight. Time for the PM to listen and change approach. That starts with taking the recommendations of my cross-party inquiry seriously and listening to what the APPG on Coronavirus has to say.”
