Responding to the Prime Minister’s statement on a second national lockdown at Saturday's Downing Street press conference, Lib Dem MP for Oxford West and Abingdon Layla Moran said: “We must break the cycle of ‘boom and bust’ lockdowns. The Government’s approach to the pandemic has already led us to a worst-of-both-worlds situation in which we have among the highest number of deaths and worst economic outlook anywhere."

"The UK Government needs to change strategy, and urgently adopt a long-term plan for a Covid-secure UK, as we laid out this week, to protect both the health and wealth of the UK.

The PM must think beyond just getting the R below 1, and use the second lockdown wisely to fix test and trace. Most importantly, the Government needs to move our frontline response away from our schools, workplaces, and communities and focus on catching new cases at the UK’s entry points.

"Only when the whole of the UK is Covid-secure will we be able to save lives long-term, restore confidence, secure jobs and open up the economy sustainably. Oxfordshire is in a worse position than it would have been had the government listened to officials and leaders on the ground. Let's work together in our community to beat this virus."
