Layla Moran, Lib Dem MP for Oxford West and Abingdon and the Lib Dem's new Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, has urged Dominic Raab to commit to the 0.7% of Gross National Income aid budget, and for him to ensure that the primary purpose of Overseas Development Assistance is the economic development of partner countries and poverty reduction.
Layla said that with coronavirus and climate change “it has never been more important to recognise that we all share one planet”.
Layla urged the Foreign Secretary to commit “right here right now” to ensuring 0.7% of Gross National Income is allocated to Overseas Development Assistance (ODA), and that it is spent primarily on the economic development of, and poverty reduction within, the partner country.
Layla Moran said: “Coronavirus and climate change mean we’ve never been more aware that we all share one planet. That’s why maintaining the UK’s commitment to 0.7% aid spending is so vital.
“This Government has an opportunity to show what Global Britain can be, and what we stand for as a nation.
“I urged the Foreign Secretary to make the commitment, which he failed to do, and I hope the Conservatives keep their manifesto promise and don’t shirk away from our responsibilities overseas.”
