Layla Moran MP has called on the government to ensure any local lockdowns are accompanied by support for businesses, workers, and councils, warning that communities "must not be left to fend for themselves."
Following comments from Home Secretary Priti Patel that the government is considering introducing a local lockdown in Leicester. Layla Moran is also calling for workers required to self-isolate under the Test and Trace scheme to be offered the same support as furloughed employees, instead of just receiving statutory sick pay as they do now.
Layla said: "Any local lockdown needs to be combined with targeted government support. That should include proper financial assistance for those workers and businesses impacted to help them cope.
"Councils have already seen their budgets stretched to breaking point, so ministers need to offer extra help. Communities must not be left to fend for themselves."
