Responding to news that the Department for Transport has ‘paused’ the Oxford to Cambridge Expressway project following the Budget statement, where the scheme was not mentioned, Layla Moran, Lib Dem MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, said the “Government must be unequivocal” and commit to a full scrapping of the motorway.
It was rumoured that the project would be cancelled during the Budget statement today, however no confirmation was forthcoming. Instead, a Department for Transport document also published today announced the Government was ‘pausing further development of the scheme.’
Commenting, Layla said:
“A pause is not the same as scrapping the Expressway – this Government must be unequivocal that the Expressway is not happening and will never happen.
“This is a step in the right direction for our whole community and everyone who has campaigned for the motorway project to be cancelled – I’m delighted that the Government has listened to us, even if they are leaving the door open to building the road in the future.
”Perhaps now the Government will finally listen to the community groups and campaigners that they have ignored thus far during their ‘review’.”
