Moran to Gove: Ministers should always follow Ministerial Code

Using the pandemic as an excuse flies in the face of what the public expect from their elected representatives.Layla Moran made it clear to Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove that “even if a minister does have a difficult job, they should follow both the Ministerial Code and obey the law”, during Cabinet Office questions in the Commons chamber yesterday morning. It comes after Home Secretary Priti Patel told the Andrew Marr show last weekend that “I think at this stage this isn’t about breaking codes and things of that nature, we’re all just getting on in Government doing very difficult jobs actually."

Layla calls on Government to “urgently revisit” changes to adult education funding

I was extremely disappointed to hear that tough targets are still being imposed on Further Education colleges despite the conditions they’ve worked through during the pandemic. Headteachers, teachers and learning-support assistants should be applauded for their work to keep further and adult education going despite unprecedented circumstances.Layla Moran has written to Gavin Williamson, Secretary of State for Education, asking him to “urgently revisit” changes to adult education funding that could lead to colleges in Oxfordshire having funding clawed back by the government.

Layla Moran, the Liberal Democrat MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, has received her first dose of the coronavirus vaccine at the Kassam Stadium mass vaccination centre, and encouraged her constituents “to do their bit and get the jab”, adding “only by receiving the vaccine can we protect ourselves, our families and our communities in the long run.”

Govt must provide local Kickstart data as stats reveal low take-up in South East

The Kickstart scheme is something I want to encourage employers in my constituency to take part in, working with our councils and OxLEP. But it’s much harder to know what we need to do if there’s no data on current application levels for Oxfordshire specifically.

Layla Moran has urged the Government to gather and release data on the uptake of the Kickstart Scheme at a more local level, after concerns were raised at a business roundtable, with the Employment Minister revealing only 19% of available Kickstart places in the South East have been filled so far.

Layla Moran signs pledge as figures reveal over 1/8 of children in Oxford West and Abingdon living in poverty

It’s a moral outrage that over 1/8 of children are still trapped in poverty in Oxford West and Abingdon. As we leave this pandemic, we can’t leave a single child behind. Instead, it looks like the Conservatives have failed to make any meaningful steps toward ending child poverty in this country.Layla Moran has today pledged “to do everything I can to make sure no child is left behind”, as new analysis from the End Child Poverty Coalition revealed that 2,978, or more than 1/8 of, children are still trapped in poverty in Oxford West and Abingdon.

Layla Moran leads cross-party group urging Government to repeal "heartless" Vagrancy Act in Queen’s Speech

We’re urging the Government to include a commitment to scrap the Act in the Queen’s Speech. If they fail to do that and push this back even further, it will deal a massive blow to our cross-party attempts to make this happen. Jenrick must publish his review, work with us and scrap the Act once and for allOver 60 MPs and Peers from five parties, as well as crossbenchers and the Bishop of Manchester, have written to Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick urging him to include the repeal of the Vagrancy Act in the Queen’s Speech (11th May 2021), in a letter led by Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran.
