Responding to figures published today by the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) showing unemployment is likely to rise to a record 12% by the end of this year, Liberal Democrat leadership contender Layla Moran said:
"These figures shows the unprecedented scale of the economic harm caused by this pandemic, with higher unemployment expected to continue until 2024.
"We need to fix the broken welfare system and ensure there is a proper safety net for all those who fall on hard times in the years ahead. The government's current approach is inhumane, bureaucratic and unfit for purpose, with thousands of children being forced into poverty.
"This crisis has shown we cannot continue how things are. We must seize this moment to build a fairer and more compassionate society. The government needs to urgently lift the benefit cap and the two child limit to provide more financial support to those in society struggling to get by. Long term, we should introduce a Universal Basic Income to free millions of people from financial insecurity and boost the economy."
