Layla Moran, Lib Dem MP for Oxford West and Abingdon and Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and International Development, has told the House of Commons that “now is the time for the UK to formally recognise the state of Palestine” during a passionate debate on the occupied territories yesterday afternoon (24/09/20).
In her speech, Layla spoke about the continuing annexation, describing Donald Trump’s peace deal as “a sham”.
As the first MP of Palestinian descent spoke about how her “heart sank” when she heard about the US President’s plan, and reminded MPs on all sides that “all Palestinians I know recognise Israel, all Palestinians I know want peace.”
Layla spoke about her family’s experience of the Israel-Palestine conflict in the region, adding that she was “a friend of Israel”. Layla called on the Government to formally recognise Palestine to give hope to Palestinians everywhere that a lasting peace settlement is possible.
Layla Moran said: “In yesterday’s debate I spoke as the first British-Palestinian MP, providing human colour from my own family’s experiences. Any lasting peace settlement between Israel and Palestine must involve the Palestinians, and that’s one of the reasons why Trump’s deal is simply a sham.
“It’s high time the UK Government formally recognised the state of Palestine. Doing so would give much-needed hope to people just trying to live their lives without fear.”
