Liberal Democrat leadership contender Layla Moran MP has warned that the government's obsession with Brexit may have cost lives after it emerged Boris Johnson scrapped a cabinet committee responsible for preparing the UK for a pandemic.
The Threats, Hazards, Resilience and Contingency Committee (THRCC), made up of cabinet ministers and responsible for ensuring the UK was ready to cope with a pandemic, was abolished by Boris Johnson after he entered Number 10. It had previously been stood down temporarily by Theresa May, reportedly so ministers and officials could focus instead on Brexit.
Liberal Democrat MP for Oxford West & Abingdon Layla Moran said: “It is incredibly damning that just six months before the coronavirus pandemic began, Boris Johnson saw fit to abolish a committee preparing the country for just such an event.
“This shows how unprepared and indifferent this Conservative Government was to the threat of a pandemic. Precious resources were diverted away to preparing for No Deal, meaning the government's obsession with Brexit may well have cost lives.
"We cannot allow the same mistakes to be made again. The public deserve full transparency and an urgent inquiry to ensure lessons are learned ahead of a potential second wave."
