At least a quarter of people who test positive for COVID-19 in the UK are being missed by contact tracers following up who they could have transmitted the virus on to.
Responding to the news, Liberal Democrat leadership hopeful Layla Moran MP said: “The Government’s mishandling of the track and trace operation does not fill anyone with confidence. How can we trust the Government to handle our private data and keep the public safe, if they missing a quarter of the people testing positive?
“If the system cannot cope now, imagine how overrun it will be if we face a second wave later in the year. This is a critical part of the response to the pandemic, and the UK is lagging far behind other countries in getting it right.
“If we are to rely on this system to get us back to normality and protect vulnerable people, we need to see testing dramatically increase and a more comprehensive, forensic contact tracing operation.”
