On Monday 8th December 2014 Lib Dem Business Secretary, Vince Cable MP, visited Abingdon and Oxford to meet the 2 millionth apprentice to begin their studies since 2010, marking the fulfillment of a key Lib Dem manifesto pledge.
Layla met the 2 millionth apprentice, Paige McConville at Abingdon & Witney College during an event attended by Business Secretary, Vince Cable MP.
Parliamentary Candidate Layla Moran joined Liberal Democrat Business Secretary, Vince Cable MP, at an event promoting apprenticeships at Abingdon & Witney College in December.
Layla's campaign to increase the number of apprenticeships offered locally has been a huge success, with 2,240 apprenticeships started in Oxford West & Abingdon since 2010.
Layla met the two millionth person to start an apprenticeship, Paige McConville, in Abingdon. Paige started her Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering Manufacture with high-tech engineering firm FMB Oxford in August. The apprenticeship course also includes study at Abingdon and Witney College, in Abingdon.
Commenting on the good news, Vince Cable said:
"Reaching the 2 millionth apprenticeship is testament to this Government’s commitment to apprenticeships. Paige and her employer are a shining example of how apprenticeships give young people the chance to start a career and give businesses the talent to grow."
Layla added: "It is fantastic that this milestone has been reached. The Liberal Democrats have been working hard, both locally and nationally, to expand the number of apprenticeships.
"I am delighted that we have now fulfilled our commitment to two million apprenticeships being started during this Parliament. But it is vital that we push on and continue to see apprenticeships progress."
