Layla Moran MP has called on the Government to urgently carry out a full data protection assessment over its test and trace programme, and introduce legislation to safeguard data privacy.
Layla's call comes as the Open Rights Group warns it is preparing a legal challenge over the test and trace programme and the amount of data that will be collected and retained by the government.
Lib Dem MP and leadership candidate Layla Moran said: "It is deeply worrying that sensitive personal data is set to be held for twenty years without the proper checks having been carried out.
“We urgently need a full data protection assessment, sunset clauses and stronger safeguards to ensure that data collected to combat this pandemic isn’t misused or stored longer than necessary. Otherwise, we risk setting a dangerous precedent and undermining trust in this vital system before it’s even properly launched.
“We all want the test and trace system to be up and running as quickly as possible, but for it to be downloaded by enough people to succeed, we need to be reassured that our personal data will be safe.”
